iPhone lags behind Blackberry smartphones, Google Android in Quarterly sale

NPD, the leading market research firm has come out with a surprising revelation. It has reported that the Android Operating System has outnumbered the Apple iPhones in sales, which means that the Android breed has taken the second spot now right behind the Backberry smartphones.

The first quarter results show that the Blackberry smartphones topped the quarterly sales figures which stood at 36% followed by Android at 28% and Apple at 21%. It is worth mentioning that Apple has a sole product in the form of Apple iPhones, whereas  Google's Android software runs across many phones, such as the Nexus One (the Google Phone), Android and Android Eris.

The reports too suggest that it is too early to conclude that Google has outcasted Apple's existence as the leader. The worldwide sales figures still show that iPhone is the leader standing at 16% of the market and Google at 7%.

NPD credits the shift to strong sales of the HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, and other Android models that are available from all four major U.S. carriers. Apple is also slated to release the next generation iPhones in June-July. The Apple fanatics are aware about this and must be looking forward to grab their new devices. That would again see the sales of Apple going up, pushing below the Android sales.

It should be noted that there are numerous Android-based smartphones on the U.S. market compared to relatively few iPhone models.iPhones are available in 8GB iPhone 3G along with the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 3GS.There are many choices when it comes to Android platform.

This list includes the Droid, Droid Eris, Nexus One, Backflip, and the Droid Incredible. Also the users who pick Android-based phones have a number of wireless carriers to choose from including Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T in the U.S. Apple's iPhone, however, is limited to AT&T's network.

The sources have treated this news as unexpected but most of them have maintained that it is a temporary effect and in coming months the Apple's figures will surely sore high even past the Android.
