Volkswagen Vento for India unveiled today, Vento India to rival Honda City
Volkswagen Vento launch in India: Volkswagen India has unveiled its C Segment sedan Volkswagen Vento in 1.6 L MPFI petrol and 1.6 L CRDI diesel versions in Delhi today. This is the second offering of the German car manufacturer following Polo launched in Feb 2010.
Volkswagen Vento is also being rolled out from the same Chakan factory in Pune where Polo and Skoda Fabia are manufactured. The model is expected to be more spacious than the earlier Polo with its extra wheelbase of 50mm. The 5 seater Sedan will be available in two trim levels, Trendline and Highline. Pricing details have not been revealed as yet. Volkswagen Vento is expected to be available for sale in the Indian markets from last quarter of 2010.
Volkswagen Vento comes in two versions Petrol and Diesel. While the Petrol version can produce an output of 105PS @ 5250 rpm and a Torque of 153NM @ 3800 rpm , the Diesel variants specification for the same stands at 105PS @ 4400 rpm and a Torque of 250 NM @ 1500-2500 rpm. The Petrol version comes with 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gear box. The diesel version however would only have a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Highline version of Volkswagen Vento would have additional features over Trendline. These include Leather finish Steering, gear knob, Rear Armrest and Livon superior seat fabric giving it a rich look. In terms of Safety also Highline scores well over Trendline with ABS, Airbags and Front & Rear Fog Lamps, all of which are not present in Trendline.
In terms of equipment both the versions of Volkswagen Vento are more or less the same with Highline having a slight edge in terms of Climate control, Remote Boot release and CD/MP3 4-speakers for Music system. Three colors Candy White, Flash Red are available in Trendline as opposed to Reflex Silver Metallic, Shadow Blue Metallic, Terra Beige Metallic, and Deep Black Pearl in Highline.
Volkswagen Vento’s entry into the Indian market is being seen as a significant move. This would be Volkswagen’s first indigenously manufactured sedan in India. This is expected to induce some cost competitiveness and after sale service expertise subsequently leading to higher volumes. Not just this, the vehicle is all set to give a stiff competition to Honda City, Maruti Suzuki SX4, Ford Fiesta, Fiat Linea and Hyundai Verna.
Of these, Maruti Suzuki SX4 and Honda City do not have a Diesel version but their brand presence is such that this factor hasn’t affected them majorly. Honda City has long dominated the Indian Sedan segment. The brand is synonymous with high quality, performance and status. It remains to be seen how Volkswagen’s new car performs in the competition.
