Motorola i1 first phone with Android that meets Military Specifications

Sprint Nextel announced today the new Motorola i1 Android Smartphone. It will be the first Android device to use the Sprint/Nextel iDen Push-to-talk Direct Connect network. The device is expected to get released this summer.

Motorola i1, among other features, meets Military specifications 810F, for protection against dust, blowing rain, extreme temperature, humidity, shock and vibration. Motorola i1 is seen as a business –first phone for ‘those who work and play hard’.

These set of rugged features also come to be the very first for an Android Smartphone. Motorola has also earlier launched many of its rugged products and i1 seem to carry the legacy a step forward by being the first rugged device with an Android.

Motorola i1 will run on Android 1.5 and comes with other features and specifications such as 3.1 inch 320 x 480 HVGA resolution  TFT touch screen with 262 K color support, accelerometer and ambient light sensor, Wi-Fi, Opera Mini 5 Web browsing and ability to use Flash 8 websites and 5 mega pixel camera with LED Flash.

Motorola i1 includes specification like Swype virtual on screen keyboard, 2GB micro SD memory card with an expandable memory of up to 32GB, 2.5 mm headset jack and 1400 mAh battery. Among the multimedia support the Motorola i1 comes with Adobe Flash, MP3, WAV, WMV, MIDI, MP4 and H.263/H.264 media formats.

Google Android phone, the new Motorola i1 supports Nextel network therefore will not be able to run MotoBlur which is the social networking centered build of Android 1.5. It also comes with Nextel Direct Connect extras which happen to be attached for the first time with an Android phone.

Motorola takes it as a big push on Sprint network as there are a large number of US workers who use Nextel Direct Connect service. Now connecting will be very quick for them on their favorite Android website. Nextel Direct Connect also enables one-to-one push-to-talk (PTT) communication nationwide. It allows group connect, International direct connect, Direct Talk SM, Direct Send SM and Group Messaging features.

Nothing has been officially declared about the pricing and time of release of the Motorola i1.
