Mobile Number Portability to be operational from Jan 20, 2011

 Mobile Number Portability will now be operational from Jan 20, 2011 which was delayed owing to certain technical issues. Now you can switch over to any mobile service provider of your choice without losing your favorite number.

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has issued a public notice announcing the availability of Mobile Number Portability across the country from tomorrow. The facility of Mobile Number Portability is quite affordable and convenient for all mobile subscribers.

Mobile Number portability facility can be accessed while paying porting charges only up to Rs.19/-. Porting time will be seven working days and it takes 15 working days in case of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North east service areas.

TRAI is very much conscious of uninterrupted mobile services being provided to their respective mobile subscribers. So in the interest of consumers TRAI has also specified that service disruption time shall not exceed 2 hours and that too during night time.

Mobile number Portability will let you change your SIM and the task of changing it becomes easy with the help of customer guide availed by TRAI. You need to go through the following process before applying for Mobile Number Portability service. 

  • Contact the new mobile service provider to whom you want to port your mobile number.
  • Obtain Customer Acquisition Form and Porting Form.
  • Obtain Unique Porting Code by sending an SMS from the mobile number you want to port to the number ‘1900’ while writing ‘PORT’ followed by space followed by 10 digit mobile number you want to port. 
  • Fill up the Customer Acquisition Form and Porting Form. 
  • Submit the duly filled Customer Acquisition Form and Porting Form along with requisite documentary proof to the mobile service provider. 
  • Obtain new SIM card from the new mobile service provider. 
  • If you are post -paid customer there should not be any dues with your existing service provider. For pre-paid customers the credit balance will not be carry forwarded. 
  • You can switch over to a new service provider only after 90 days stay with the existing service provider. 
  • You have to wait minimum 90 days for second number porting. This is to prevent the misuse of this facility and prevent frequent switching. 
  • Mobile Number Portability service takes specified time to activate the ported number. You will be informed by new mobile service provider about the date and time of porting on your mobile phone. You may replace the old SIM with the new one provided by chosen mobile service provider after the specified time and date. However, you can withdraw your porting request within 24 hrs of applying. Mobile Number Portability service is available within the circle only. The consumers are allowed to change mobile service provider within the same service area only. 

Mobile Number Portability service is good news for CDMA mobile subscribers as they can flexibly switch over from CDMA to GSM and vice versa. They only need to change the handset, because the technologies are different. CDMA mobile subscribers will tend to opt a suitable GSM service due to the non availability of good CDMA handsets. Reliance and Tata Indicom have taken notice of public needs are presenting amazing handsets for CDMA mobile subscribers.
