Blackberry maker RIM calls a battle with Apple and Android now acquires TAT

RIM, the Canadian makers of BlackBerry smartphones is up for some serious battle with Apple’s iPhone and a whole lot of smartphones based on Google’s Android platform by various manufacturers.

RIM made an announcement that it was buying The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), a mobile software design company based in Sweden. With the announcement it is believed that RIM is now seriously considering about an overhaul of its outdated and boring interface that powers its blackberry smartphones and recently launched Playbook.

RIM acted very late in doing something significant to power itself for a fierce battle with Apple’s iPhone and Android based smartphone but still the announcement shows that it is opening up for better and sparking ideas from the new genre of software makers to improve its products.

iPhone has been ruling the smartphone arena for so long and latest and the most quick to follow it in the smartphone platform race is Android which is steadily becoming the favorite platform among other smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, Sony, LG and more.

According to one survey, RIM’s BlackBerry is at number three when it comes to people’s preference for a smartphone brand with iPhone and Android are number one and two respectively. Faced by such a fierce competition RIM is taking steps to improve and very recently we heard it picking up app maker Data Viz and app store software maker Cellmania. It also acquired QNX to power its latest range of smartphones and tablet.

Nonetheless among all that competition and ranking RIM is still the preferred choice among its loyal clientele that is the corporate customers. And with its abovementioned acquisitions RIM needs to do a little bit more in areas of software, app distribution and interface design so that it could compete well with world’s leading smartphone brands and make its product a bit more exciting and good looking.
