Apple's iPhone to get Skype 2.0 with 3G calling facility, charges in Sep.

Apple iPhone clients now get an opportunity to make calls to other Skype users over 3G networks- according to Skype’s latest version. This new Skype 2.0 software lets the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and second and third generation iPod users make calls using Skype. The earlier version of the software enabled the Skype clients to make Skype calls when the phone was connected to Wi-Fi.

Skype has further announced that the Skype-to-Skype calls remain free of charge and it will start charging for the Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G beginning in September. This means that 3G Skype to Skype calls will be free till that time. The pricing will be announced by Skype for 2011 and further in the coming months.

It is also not decided that if users will be required to pay a fee in addition to what they pay for Skype minutes or unlimited calling plans in case they want to make calls to landline or mobile phones over iPhone’s 3G connection. It is interesting to note that Apple and AT&T had prohibited such a practice because of the competition between Skype and the network. It is unclear whether Skype, while deciding its monthly subscription will work over a fraction of this cost to AT&T itself.

But before going in for the facility to call on 3G, the users will have to make sure that whether IP telephony is allowed by the terms and conditions of their data plan. There are mobile operators who either low this IP technology for a charge and some even do not allow and further more some may charge an extra fee for the same. According to Gizmodo the iPhone- ready service will be available with a small monthly fee together with the operator’s charges.

According to Skype, the upgrades also includes near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls, faster start up time, a quick access to the dial pad via the iPhone home screen and a better call-quality indicator that helps customers choose the best moment to call. The application is available from iPhone App Store.
